Austrian Pine

The Austrian Pine, ‘Pinus nigra,’ is an evergreen conifer that will thrive in urban locations. The densely branched tree produces long, dark green needles. Its spreading branches will from a pyramidal shape when young. As the tree matures, however, it will often achieve a picturesque flat-topped head. The Austrian Pine will also make a good choice for a thick screen or windbreak in more rural settings. Starting with a two year old seeding in a good site, it should reach about five feet in only six to seven years.

The Autumn Blaze Red Maple, ‘Acer fremanii,’ can grow up to three feet per year under the right conditions. This extremely fast-growing maple is tolerant of clay soils as well as drought conditions. It is most often planted for its brilliant red fall color. Developed in north-central Ohio, the Autumn Blaze Maple is a deciduous tree that develops a dense oval head with strong branching. This is a popular shade tree as well as and ornamental. It will be able to survive in a wide range of climates, from Michigan to central Florida.

The Autumn Olive Tree, ‘Elaeagnus umbellate,’ produces small (less than a quarter inch), fleshy fruits that will range in color from pink to red. The fruits are finely dotted with pale scales, and are produced in abundance yearly. This plant grows as a medium sized tree or large shrub, and can reach height of over twenty feet. Its leaves are dark green to grayish-green on their upper surfaces, while the lower surface is covered with silvery white scales. This conspicuous characteristic of the Autumn Olive tree can be seen from a distance as the leaves flutter in the wind.

The Bald Cypress, ‘Taxodium distichum,’ is a stately tree that is commonly grown in parks or yards. This is a lofty, deciduous conifer that exhibits a slender, pyramidal shape. Bald Cypress trees have moderate water requirements, and are often grown in wet areas by landscapers and landowners. The needle-shaped leaves are dark green in the spring and summer. This plant will only produce its “knees” when grown either in or around water for most of the year. The Bald Cypress can thrive in many types of soil and is very adaptable to both wet and dry sites.

The Barberry Red Leaf Japanese, ‘Berberis thunbergii,’ features slender, spiny and small branches with roundly oval leaves that are a deep red to purple color. Although tolerant of many types of soil, the Barberry bush will not grow well in excessively wet locations. This plant makes an excellent hedge or filler shrub.
