Lacebark Elm

The Lacebark Elm Tree, ‘Ulmus parvifolia,’ is a very hardy and tough deciduous shade tree. It is a great tree for urban conditions because it is capable of withstanding harsh climates, poor soil and air pollution. Its gray bark will start to exfoliate and peel off in small patches as the trunk matures. This will result in a patchwork of mottled colors beneath, including green, orange, brown and gray. The Lacebark Elm tree is a great selection to use as a street tree.

Lagerfeld Rose

The Lagerfeld rose produces very large, four to five inch flowers that grow in sprays of five to fifteen flowers each. This great exhibition rose has high centered silvery lavender buds. This flower has a very intense fragrance, and its unique beauty makes it a favorite of many rose lovers.

Lapin Cherry Tree

The Lapin Cherry tree produces some of the largest and juiciest cherries around. The fruits are large and deep purple in color, with a slightly lighter red flesh. The Lapin Cherry, which is the French word for ‘rabbit,’ is a big, beautiful and dark red cherry. Great for snacking, these fruits are so large that only a single one is a mouthful. The skin has a bright appearance and is resistant to splitting with its flexible skin. This excellent pollinator is a very heavy bearer.

Seafoam Rose

The Seafoam rose produces beautiful white flowers that contrast nicely with its small glossy foliage. This rose is perfect for a mounding ground cover or small climber. It is disease resistant and very winter hardy.

Serviceberry

The Serviceberry tree, ‘Amelanchier canadensis,’ is a large shrub with erect stems that will form multi-stemmed clumps. Also know as a Juneberry, Shadblow or Shadbush, the Serviceberry tree are deciduous shrubs or small trees that will grow in the under-story off temperate forests. These little shrubs are very useful for naturalized plantings, especially in an open woodland under tall oaks or pines. They have a very beautiful, but brief, very early flowering period and their fall foliage is among the best. This is a wonderful tree for planting in a small yard.

Shademaster Honey Locust

The Shademaster Honey Locust Tree, ‘Gleditsia triacanthos inermis,’ is a moderately fast growing deciduous tree. It is most commonly found on moist bottomlands or limestone soils. Its foliage is fine textured, medium green in color and will seldom need raking because of the small size of the leaves. It will have a more or less rectangular outline that is formed by its upright, ascending branches that then spread horizontally. The Shademaster Honey Locust is also known as the Sweet Locust or Thorny Locust tree.

Shagbark Hickory

The Shagbark Hickory Tree, ‘Carya ovata,’ features a bold-textured, jagged branch structure and thick twigs to give it a very striking appearance in the winter. It also has distinctive, shaggy bark that is very conspicuous on this tall straight tree. The nuts produced are edible, and serve as a source of food for both humans and wildlife. The Shagbark Hickory is also known as the Bigleaf Shagbark, Kingnut, Big Shellbark, western Shellbark and thick Shellbark tree.

Shellbark Hickory

The Shellbark Hickory Tree, ‘Carya laciniosa,’ is a deciduous tree that is similar to the Shagbark Hickory, but its bark is not so shaggy. Its fruit is somewhat larger than that of other hickories. This big shade tree prefers to grow in wet, fertile bottomlands and will display a lovely yellow fall color. The Shellbark is also knows as the Kingnut, Bottom Shellbark, Thick Shellbark and Western Shellbark tree.

Chickasaw Plum

The Chickasaw Plum Tree, ‘Prunus angustifolia,’ occurs naturally in thickets, pastures, fencerows, fields, disturbed areas and stream banks. This is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub that may be pruned to a small tree. It is sometimes seen as a small, short-trunked tree that grows to only twenty-five feet tall. Its beautiful, five-petaled white flowers appear along the stems in March, well before the foliage emerges. This is a true ornamental flowering tree, and the Native Americans regularly consumed the fresh fruit or dried it for winter.

Chinese Chestnut

The Chinese Chestnut, ‘Castanea mollissima,’ produces sweet-flavored nuts in the winter that are edible. The outer shell of these nuts is prickly and must be removed. It is a deciduous tree that has moderate water requirements and a fair tolerance to alkali soils and salt, as well as heat, drought and transplanting. Landscapers often plant the Chinese Chestnut as an ornamental tree or a shade or nut tree. Planted in rows, they make a great windbreak.

Black Chokeberry

The Black Chokeberry, ‘Aronia melanocarpa black,’ displays its clusters of five-petaled, white flowers in the spring. These flowers are followed by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits in the autumn. The fruits usually will not persist into the winter. The open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy deciduous shrubs will typically grow to three to six feet in height. The plants are easily grown in average, medium wet or well-drained soil in full sunlight to partial shade. They are tolerant of a wide range of soils. The best fruit production will occur when planted in full sunlight. The Chokeberry bush will spread by root suckers to form small colonies.

Red Chokeberry

The Red Chokeberry, ‘Aronia arbutifolia Brilliantissima,’ displays its clusters white to pinking flowers in the spring. These flowers are followed by abundant glossy red fruits up to one half inch in diameter, that appear in dense clusters along the branches. This deciduous shrub, which is most noted for its red berries and red fall foliage, will slowly grow to from six to eight feet in height. They are tolerant of a wide range of soils. The best fruit production will occur when planted in full sunlight. The Chokeberry bush will spread by root suckers to form small colonies.

Chuckles Rose

The Chuckles rose can be used either as a small climber or pruned as a bush. This hardy Canadian bred shrub blooms in clusters with it two inch, double fuchsia flowers that are quite fragrant. It will grow to five or six feet tall, with yellow green foliage. This plant will have a repeat bloom later in the season.
